Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone. I am reposting this picture I took of the north side of Trillium Lake looking towards Mt Hood as my favorite picture of 2009. Not only is it representative of this blog, but it is also the location where I was married, which was the most important event of my past 12 months. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2010!

Waterfall behind Bagby Hot Springs

A trail behind Bagby Hot Springs winds into the woods. The trail is marked "1/2 mile to waterfall", but this is a short 1/2 mile. It took only a few minutes to reach the falls, which were about half frozen and surrounded by long icicles. You could walk behind the falls and look up to where the water spilled over the edge.

Snow should stay in the mountains

It snowed in the Portland Metro area yesterday evening. Man, what a mess it makes when the snow leaves its normal "home" up in the mountains and comes down into town. Traffic accidents galore - its almost like a panic! We do get a good snowfall almost once a year, but it always seems to catch people off guard. Luckily, this morning, the temps are higher and the snowfall is already slushy and melting away.
I prefer the snow to stay up in the mountains, such as is pictured above. I took this photo Sunday on my hike up to Bagby Hot Springs (see posts this week for more of our adventures). This is crossing a bridge over one of the creeks heading up the trail, Whetstone Creek.

Row of Icicles

The temperature when we left the car at 9:30am to hike up to Bagby Hot Springs on Sunday was 27 degrees F. It wasnt bad though. Any wind was blocked by the trees surrounding us. However, the river was surrounded by ice. When crossing one of the trails bridges, I spotted this chilly looking log that had fallen over one of the quick moving water chutes.

Bagby Hot Springs

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! We did :) On Sunday, some friends from out of town came to visit and we went to Bagby Hot Springs. Bagby is a natural hot springs site located up in the wilderness beyond Estacada, OR. The site is about a mile hike in, and consists of a variety of tubs and bathhouses. This time of year it is much less popular than in the summer due to the snow. But the 138 degree crystal blue waters provide comfort in even the cold weather. We got there early and claimed the main tub on the open deck. We stayed til it started to get darker and hiked out. This week I will post some pics from our adventure.
